Black Bart Festival ....
So, what is the Black Bart Festival.?
Republic has one
unique place in history.
The 1890’s stagecoach
robber, Black Bart, was
captured here.
After robbing a Chicago
bound stagecoach and
shooting two occupants, killing one, Black Bart came into Republic on the South Shore Railroad.
After spending the
night sleeping in the
Murphy hotel, he
walked outside to be “whaled by Constable
Whailen”. The rest of
his trials and travails
will be recounted in other places, but the
reenactments of his capture
will be one of two
centerpieces of the upcoming
Black Bart activities
July 31st and
August 1st.

Black Bart was a robber.
He stole gold. Where
did it go? Where did he
hide it? Twelve commemorative coins will be hidden around Republic Township...a drawing will take place at the festival and one of the twelve finders will win a real Gold Double Eagle coin. Are they hidden at historical sites or buried along the shore of the Michigamme? One thing is certain, there is a gold doubloon worth about $1,300 right now, that will be “won” by someone, during the
Black Bart weekend.
Rumor has it that Bart
will be visiting various
businesses in Republic, leaving clues behind.
It is also rumored that the posse out to find Black Bart,
and trying to find his gold, are using the Summer Place
as their headquarters. Further clues would most certainly
be available at the designated headquarters in the
near future.
In addition to the main activities, the EDC is asking
various groups to consider bringing in demonstration
activities, such as ax throwing, trick shot artists, quick
draw contests, etc. It is hoped that other “in period”
activities will be added, and the list of events will grow
in future years. One event that has been suggested is a “Texas Holdem”
tournament, to be held in the newly purchased Republic Bank Building. Proceeds to go toward grants
for the Historical Renovation of the building.
A special edition of the newsletter is planned for the
near future to keep you informed.
Oh, there may be clues on Bart’s whereabouts showing
up occasionally. Putting them together could find a
person a “piece” of the puzzle.
