Community Planning Meeting, Jan. 2007
DRAFT
The community planning committee met on January 31, 2007 at 7 p.m. at the Township Hall.
Rita Hodgins–Van Neste chaired the meeting.
The Purpose was to check the progress of the 4 objectives set at the previous meeting.
Objective one was the development of the Munson Park area.
That committee reported that the township had put out for bids, and accepted a bid from Coleman Engineering to design a town square, and to apply for the grants to do the construction. They will also provide the simple amendment to the Township 5 year recreation plan, which is necessary to apply for DNR grants.
Objective two was to improve the entrances to North and South Republic
That committee suggested moving the green highway signs which designate the entrance to North Republic from the M-95/Dead Man’s Curve intersection, to the M-95/River Road intersection. The committee also looked into the blue and white tourist directional signs which direct travelers to restaurants, gas stations, etc. They cost $360 per year. This will be looked into further, particularly with the businesses that would benefit. It was further pointed out that the Dead Man’s Curve intersection should have a street sign designating it by it’s proper name, which is Park City Road. Also, they will try to identify which groups might want their activities advertised on a community sign at the M-95/River Road intersection.
Objective three was the continuing development of the Heritage Trail.
That committee reported that the group had been formally accepted as a subcommittee of the Township Planning Commission. They had created the boundaries map needed. Had toured the wetlands in preparation, identifying a potential entrance, and specific viewing areas, etc. Have a meeting coming up this spring with the representatives of CCI to resolve access issues, including that entrance, parking for vehicles, etc. CCI will be approving the initial payment to the Township sometime in March, for the enhancement funds they have designated for the wetlands. And the committee will be submitting a letter to CCI listing all of the potential easement needs for multiple future projects.
Objective four was to promote the local crafters and activities.
That committee has compiled part of the list of the local crafters. The list will be completed, and a March meeting is envisioned. The core group will be meeting in March to plan the activities for the upcoming summer, and will include a brain-storming session. A fall festival is planned on Sept 15th, which coincides with a Scout-arama which is being held at the Hurst Resort, and the Baked Potato festival planned by the Historical Society on Sept 16th. A "Spring Fling" is tentatively envisioned for 2008.
