Regular Meeting
Republic Township
08-23-07PRESENT: Adams, Hurst, Johnson, Mattila, Skogman
VISITORS: six area residents1. Supervisor Johnson called the meeting to order at 7:00pm in the Township Hall.
2. Salute to Flag
3. Motion by Mattila, seconded by Adams, to approve the agenda with the following additions. CARRIED.
9-h/water level 9-i/vandalism-Portajohn 9-j/Town Square Eng.
4. Motion by Mattila, seconded by Adams, to approve the minutes of the following meetings as presented. CARRIED.
07-27-07 [regular] 08-01-07 [special]
5. Motion by Mattila, seconded by Adams, to pay the bills as presented, with check # 32375 being reissued for the correct amount. CARRIED.
6. PUBLIC COMMENT: length – 3 minutes
7. REPORTS:
a) Trustee Adams- attended & reported on the Planning Comm. & Co. Solid Waste meetings.
b) Trustee Hurst- attended & reported on the Wetlands tour, Rec. Authority & Crimmins meetings.
c) Fire Department- no report
d) Ambulance- written report from Nancy Currie.
Motion by Skogman, seconded by Adams, to purchase 12 jackets for the EMT’s at an approximate cost of $125 each. CARRIED.
e) Heritage Trail- Chuck Hurst; a letter of support to Roger Storm is needed for purchase of railroad grade; reported further on Wetlands tour.
f) Assessing- new ‘electronic’ rolls with the State; wants a laptop for the dept.
Motion by Adams, seconded by Hurst, to purchase a laptop for Assessor Gary Johnson. CARRIED, 3-yes, 2-no [Mattila, Skogman].
8. UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
a) Stubblefield- Twp attorney has sent letter to him requesting reimbursement of legal fees.
b) Cemetery Fence- still searching for plastic fencing.
c) Bunk- Mrs. Coffee has sent a response to the Bunks.
d) Mine Property- Supervisor Johnson and Trustee Hurst met with Mr. Crimmins.
e) Vacant Lots- Republic Township owns the following listed vacant lots:

52-12-450-011-00Motion by Mattila, seconded by Hurst, to put the above listed lots up for sale;
If said lots do not sell before April of 2008, the Board will readdress the issue
At that time. CARRIED.9. NEW BUSINESS:
a) Sewer Smoke Test- do the testing to see which residents are or are not connected to the Township sewer system.
Motion by Adams, seconded by Hurst, to check with Rural Water in regards to them doing the smoke testing. CARRIED.
b) ES Building/Electrical Work-
Motion by Mattila, seconded by Adams, to hire an electrician to do the necessary electrical work at the ES Building. CARRIED.
c) 52-12-450-049-00 Purchase-
Motion by Adams, seconded by Hurst, to authorize purchase of said lot from Mr. & Mrs. Hall at a price of $5,000. CARRIED.
d) 52-12-450-050-00 Purchase-
Motion by Skogman, seconded by Adams, to send letter to owner of said lot offering to purchase it for a price of $1,300. CARRIED.
e) Highway Sign Permit-
Motion by Adams, seconded by Mattila, to pay $100 to get the South Republic sign permitted. CARRIED.
f) LP Gas Offer- received an offer from UP Propane.
Motion by Mattila, seconded by Adams, to stay with our current supplier. CARRIED.
g) Disc Golf Waiver- to be submitted to our insurance carrier for approval.
h) Water Level- river level is VERY low; Board consensus is to check wells and, if water level in wells is down, then put on a watering ban.
i) Port-a-John Vandalism- one was destroyed.
Motion by Mattila, seconded by Adams, to offer a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest & conviction of said offender(s). CARRIED.
j) Town Square Engineering-
Motion by Hurst, seconded by Skogman, to re-bid for an engineering firm for the Town Square Project. CARRIED.

Special Meeting
Republic Township
09-11-07PRESENT: Adams, Hurst, Johnson, Mattila, Skogman
VISITORS: none1. Supervisor Johnson called the meeting to order at 12:30pm in the Township Hall.
2. PURPOSE OF MEETING: Discussion/action = snowmobile trail permit/Town Square grant/other matters to come before the Board.
Snowmobile Trail Permit-
Motion by Skogman, seconded by Mattila, to sign the permit to allow the snowmobile trail to run through Township property by School Lake. CARRIED.
Town Square Project-
Motion by Adams, seconded by Hurst, to authorize Bill Sanders [UPEA] to go through present grant application, correct errors, and resubmit it to Lansing [at no cost to Twp]. CARRIED.
Farm Bill/Rural Development- Jim Koskiniemi [UPEA];
Motion by Skogman, seconded by Mattila, to authorize UPEA to file a formal application to Rural Development for water and or sewer system capital improvements. CARRIED.
