Regular Meeting
Republic Township Board
07-24-08

PRESENT: Adams, Hurst, Johnson, Mattila, Skogman
VISITORS: 11 area residents

1. Supervisor Johnson called the meeting to order at 7:00pm in the Township Hall.

2. Salute to Flag

3. Motion by Skogman, seconded by Hurst, to approve the agenda as presented. CARRIED.

4. Motion by Mattila, seconded by Adams, to approve the minutes of the following meetings as presented. CARRIED.

5. Motion by Mattila, seconded by Hurst, to pay the bills in the amount of $104,803.69. CARRIED.

6. PUBLIC COMMENT: length – 2 minutes

7. REPORTS:

a) Trustee Adams – attended & reported on two local meetings

b) Trustee Hurst – attended & reported on Rec Authority meeting.

c) Heritage Trail – Chuck Hurst; July 5th Open House was successful; a Grand Opening is proposed for this fall; trying to get the trail a National designation; proposed signage for the Trail is going to the Planning Commission for review.

d) Ambulance – Nancy Currie; Don & Ann Tapio have informally resigned from EMS crew; Nancy has applied for a new grant for extrication equipment.

e) Assessing/Zoning – doing a cost study regarding zoning permits; IRS mileage rate went up to $.585 as of July 1, 2008.

f) Website – Fred Nannestad; gave an extensive & through report.

g) DPW – no report

 

8. UNFINISHED BUSINESS:

a) Road Repair Grant – is to start August 1st.

b) Water Line Grant – met with Rural Development regarding paperwork.

c) Pasty.Net – working on wireless service; grant expires on December 31st.

d) Ordinance Enforcement Officer –

Motion by Johnson, seconded by Adams, to offer the job to Bill DeGenaro with his job description to include both enforcement officer & private investigator; Mr. DeGenaro will be a contract employee. CARRIED.

e) Old DPW Trucks-

Motion by Mattila, seconded by Adams, to put the 2 trucks up for sale, with the following descriptions & prices. CARRIED.

1976 Ford 250 - $2,500 w/plow
1978 Dump truck - $3,000 w/plow

f) Smoke Test – testing is completed and we have received a report of the results.

g) Cemetery Stone Cleaning – we have a budgeted amount of $2,000 for stone cleaning; Treasurer Mattila has a list of the stones to be cleaned by Mr. Munson.

1. NEW BUSINESS:

a) Welcome Baskets – Maria Hult gave a presentation on what they would like to do. Board consensus is that it is ok.

b) Garbage Assistance Request- Perch Lake garbage problem.

Motion by Mattila, seconded by Adams, to authorize Supervisor Johnson to write a letter to Humboldt Township to seek an agreement to get the trash picked up. CARRIED.

c) Township Sign Project – presentation by Paul Polanski.

Motion by Johnson, seconded by Skogman, to authorize the proposed renovation to the Republic sign. CARRIED.

d) Historical Society Calendar Ad –

Motion by Adams, seconded by Mattila, to purchase a $35 ad on the Historical Society’s Calendar. CARRIED.

e) Budget Amendments –

Motion by Adams, seconded by Hurst, to accept the budget amendments as presented. CARRIED.

f) Low Flying Airplane Complaints – Mr. Nannestad reported on the matter.

g) Public Survey – survey put together by Jim Brennan; to be mass-mailed to all property owners.

Motion by Mattila, seconded by Adams, to mail the survey to all property owners of Republic Township, and to get the mailing labels from the County Tax Department. CARRIED.

h) Cemetery Ordinance – [a copy of ordinance is available for viewing in the Township Office]

WHEREAS , changing times have made it necessary for Republic Township to revise its cemetery ordinance,….

BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that Republic Township revised its Cemetery Ordinance.
ROLL CALL VOTE: Adams-yes, Hurst-yes, Johnson-yes, Mattila-yes, Skogman-yes. CARRIED.

i) Summer Student-

Motion by Adams, seconded by Johnson, to retain Jesse Durant as a summer worker through the third week of August. CARRIED.

j) Lake Michigamme Big Item Pickup – scheduled for August 11th.

k) Ordinance Changes – changes to several Township ordinances have been proposed.

Election Commission Meeting
Republic Township

PRESENT: Gary Johnson, Faye Mattila, Vickie Skogman
VISITORS: none

1. Clerk Skogman called the meeting to order at 1:00pm in the Township Office.

2. PURPOSE OF MEETING: To hire election workers for the August 5, 2008 primary election and to set compensation for said workers.

Motion by Mattila, seconded by Johnson, to hire the following people to be election workers for the August 5, 2008 primary election. CARRIED.

Motion by Johnson, seconded by Mattila, to pay the precinct chair at $11 per hour and election workers at $10 per hour. CARRIED.
