Republic Township Board
05-28-09PRESENT: Hurst, Johnson, Koski, Mattila, Skogman
VISITORS: J. Brennan, J. Nault, F. Nannestad1. Supervisor Johnson called the meeting to order at 7:00pm in the Township Hall.

3. Motion/Mattila, 2nd/Koski, to approve agenda as presented with the following addition. CARRIED.
Item 9-M (road millage)
4. Motion/Mattila, 2nd/Hurst, to approve minutes of regular meeting of 04-23-09 as presented. CARRIED.
5. Motion/Mattila, 2nd Hurst, to pay bills in the amount of $60,539.35. CARRIED.
6. PUBLIC COMMENT: none offered
7. REPORTS:
a) Trustee Koski- attended the Planning Commission hearing on May 18th.
b) Trustee Hurst/Heritage Trail- spoke to owner of bank building; spoke regarding wetlands.
c) Ambulance- FEMA grant submitted
d) Assessing- Gary & Sid took class in Escanaba; Gary passed test.
e) Website- report from Mr. Nannestad.
f) DPW-
Fuel Tank- tabled 2-Way Radios- tabled
8. UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
a) Road Repair Grant- tabled
b) Water Project Grant- tank site located [behind Gary Kippola’s];
Motion/Mattila, 2nd/Hurst to sign the invoice from UPEA in the amount of $2,566.50. CARRIED.
c) Evergreen Street Sewer Issue- tabled
d) Insurance Issues- Clerk to set up a meeting with employees and insurance agent.
e) Horseshoe Courts- having trouble finding someone to do the job; Supervisor is to get the job done with the best price bid.
f) Auditorium Windows- tabled until June Meeting
g) Community Heroes Ceremony- will be the 2nd or 3rd weekend in September.
1. NEW BUSINESS:
a) Cemetery Entrance- has not been repaired as of yet [car accident].
b) Outdoor Burning Ordinance- to be reviewed by Twp attorney.
c) Garbage Shack- Holli Blue Road
d) Faye’s Lot- #52-12-403-001-00
Motion/Koski, 2nd/Hurst, to sell this lot to Charles & Faye Mattila for $500. CARRIED.
e) Water Improvement Financing District-
Motion/Hurst, 2nd/Johnson, to concur with the provided timeline for TIFA. CARRIED.
f) Water Hook-up Issues- snowmobile club, Schneider place, St. Vincent’s.
Motion/Hurst, 2nd/Koski, to start charging Schneider & Snowmobile Club the current water rates. CARRIED.
g) Ball field- standard maintenance of $500; Jason Nault spoke of other problems at the ball field.
Motion/Mattila, 2nd/Hurst, to pay $500 to the Republic Little League for maintenance of ball field. CARRIED.
h) Lake Michigamme ‘Big Item’ Pickup- will take place August 3rd & 4th.
i) Ordinance Work- requests from Planning Commission.
j) EMS ‘Fire Stand-by’ Pay- must be a minimum of 1 hour;
1 – 3 hours – equals 1 run
4 – 6 hours – equals 2 runs
7 – 9 hours – equals 3 runsMotion/Johnson, 2nd/Hurst, to adopt the pay rates for EMT fire ‘stand-bys’. CARRIED.
k) Broadband Issues- need to put up 2 additional towers; need to secure tower sites.
l) Spring Cleanup- 2nd week in June.
m) Road Repair Millage- $24,709 for ½ mill; to be put on November ballot.
n) Republic Dam-
Motion/Koski, 2nd/Mattila, to ask Mr. Crimmins for a copy of his plan for the Michigamme River Dam. CARRIED
